Mokokchung, October 22: The first Mokokchung Interclub Badminton Championship 2016 would be held from October 26-29 at Indoor stadium, Mokokchung. The event has been organised by Mokokcung District Badminton Association (MDBA).
The tournament would be a team event and only affiliated clubs under MDBA could participate in it, this was informed by MDBA members at a press conference here on Saturday.
According to the MDBA members the tournament has been organized to popularize badminton as a professional sport and promote badminton clubs as well as nurture young badminton players in the district/state. The events would be held in seven categories: Under-13 Boys’ Singles, Under-15 Girls’ Singles, Under-17 Boys’ Singles, Men’s Doubles, Veterans 35+ Men’s Doubles, Veterans 45+ Men’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. Team events would be decided via best-of-seven matches, it was informed.
Officials also informed that already six clubs have registered for the tourney and more clubs were expected to participate in the event.
They also added that the MDBA was planning to rope in local TV Cable distributor to telecast the tournament. To make the tournament “more attractive” MDBA has allowed hiring of players to represent the club in the tournament.
A team, however, could hire a maximum of 3 (three) players from anywhere within or outside the district and the remaining players should be members of the club.
