Mokokchung, Dec. 4 (EMN): Mokokchung town is gearing up for the annual traditional festivities in December. And all credit to the town that firecrackers, a hazard to both health and environment, will be banned there throughout the festive season this year, it was informed.

The traditional attractions of Mokokchung in December namely the Night Carnival, annual Cake Race and the mid-night service will be organised by the Adventure & Motorsports Association and sponsored by the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC).

The organisers informed about the preparations for the forthcoming festive programmes during a press conference at the MMC’s office chamber on Wednesday in Mokokchung. The motorsports association’s officials said the work involved is a herculean task.

Nonetheless, the association has resolved to give its best efforts for the denizens of Mokokchung.

Acknowledging the municipal council for its endorsement to the association to host the calendar event of Mokokchung, they said elaborate committees have been set-up for each event to give the best attractions to the traditional events.

All the events are to be concentrated at the town’s main square the ‘police point.’

The additional deputy commissioner of Mokokchung district W Manpai said that the events will be plastic-free event, and firecrackers will be banned throughout the festive season.

The second edition of the town’s Night Carnival will commence from December 16 and the event will be conducted till the 19th starting from 6 pm to 9 pm, said the convener of the carnival’s committee Arenla Lemtur.

‘We are pushing approximately 60 stalls. And as a tradition, the Assam Rifles Pipe Band march will kick off the carnival,’ she said.

Some of the attractions of the carnival will be an artists’ corner featuring different bands and musicians ranging from veterans to contemporary performers, besides homemade products and verities of cuisines there for the citizens.

The break-up of the artists’ corner: Mokokchung District Musician Association on day-1; Budding Talents on day-2; Oldies and culmination night on day-3; and Open Mic on day-4, the organisers informed.

Basically, the carnival’s objective is to ‘herald the festive season and also act as a launching pad for young entrepreneurs to showcase their innovative products to the people,’ Lemtur said.

Forms to the night carnival can be collected from Bio-Medical, below Imlong Place. The last date of submission will be December 13, the organisers informed.

However, the organisers have cautioned that firecrackers, alcohol and other intoxicating substances are banned during carnival.

Further, the motorsports association informed that the 48th annual Cake Race 2019 competition will be held on December 24. The programme will begin at 7 am at the police point.

It is expected that the race will have the participation of members of all the wards in Mokokchung town.

Ten runners, which will be two women and eight men, from each ward will cover a distance of 5150 meters in the rally format.

Further, the annual mid-night service, which is held on December 31 annually at the police point to welcome the New Year will start from 9 pm onwards, said Senti, convener of the mid-night service.

He said this year’s service will be a surprise package for denizens of Mokokchung which will be ‘short-fast and explosive.’

Guest artists from outside as well as local artists will be at the New Year’s Eve party at the police point, Senti hinted.
