Mokokchung, March 19 (EMN): Marepkong Youth Association on Saturday announced that the 3rd edition of the Mokokchung inter-ward football tournament will commence from May 4 to the 14th on the theme ‘Towards Excellence’ at Imkongmeren Sports complex in Mokokchung.
In a press conference at Community Hall Marepkong, Bendangnukshi Jamir, convenor of organising committee, informed that as per the calendar, the football tournament was supposed to be held from March 14 to the 24th but was canceled.
As Mokokchung District Football Association (MDFA) is gearing up to host the Dr. T Ao Inter-district Football Trophy in April, the tournament had to be postponed, it was informed.
The Association further informed that the District Sports Office is one of the main sponsors of the tourney. The tournament promises a cash prize of INR 50,000 for the champion and INR 30,000 for the runner-up with trophy and certificates.
The tournament also has individual prizes which includes highest goal scorer, best defender, best goalkeeper and player of the tournament.
The organiser also shared that they plan to make this tournament into a self-financed tourney by 2025 for which ‘ground works have already been implemented’ to achieve their target.
Further, by 2025 they aim to introduce certified license coaches for each team, mainly for the team discipline.
‘We are in touch with the Nagaland Football Coaches Association and plan to have deliberation with the stakeholders and organise a free coaching camp for the licensing of coaches in coming days,’ it informed.
The inter-ward football tournament is the second biggest tournament after the MDFA trophy. The technical committee will notify the submission of forms at a later date, it said.
