MOKOKCHUNG — The Mokokchung District Open Badminton Championship 2026 commenced on Tuesday at the Indoor Badminton Stadium in Mokokchung.
Organised by the Mokokchung District Badminton Association (MDBA), the 38th edition of the three-day tournament is scheduled to conclude on July 23.
A total of 65 players, comprising 49 boys and 16 girls, are competing across 17 categories, including U-9 Boys Singles, U-9 Girls Singles, U-11 Boys Singles, U-11 Girls Doubles, U-13 Boys Singles, U-13 Boys Doubles, U-13 Girls Singles, U-13 Girls Doubles, U-15 Boys Singles, U-15 Boys Doubles, U-17 Boys Singles, U-17 Boys Doubles, Junior Boys Singles, Junior Boys Doubles, Senior Doubles, and 35+ Men’s Doubles.
Addressing the participants, Imliyanger congratulated the MDBA for regularly organising the championship and providing a valuable platform for young badminton talent in the district. He stated that sports are not just about winning but also about fostering character, discipline, and resilience.
"Play with resilience, play with integrity, and play responsibly. Let your racket and shuttlecock do the talking," he said, while wishing all participants success in the tournament.
MDBA President Imomar shared the association’s long-term vision of producing an Olympian by 2040. He noted that the MDBA regularly organises annual tournaments and coaching camps at various levels to nurture young talent.
While acknowledging the support of parents and occasional financial assistance from the district administration, Imomar highlighted the financial challenges involved in conducting coaching camps and district-level tournaments. He appealed for greater support from the government and other organisations to strengthen badminton development in the district.
