PRIME MINISTER ON NE YOUTH ATTACKS

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his “concern and anguish” over the repeated attacks on students and youths from the North Eastern region in Delhi and other parts of the country and directed the Union Home Minister and the National Security Adviser (NSA) to chalk out measures to prevent such incidents.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, highly placed sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said that during a recent meeting, the Prime Minister asked Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and NSA Ajit Doval as to why such incidents are happening and what steps the Government has taken to prevent such attacks. He directed Singh and Doval to take immediate and effective steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Sources said immediately after the meeting with the Prime Minister, the NSA, along with Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) RN Ravi, went to the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, where a number of youths of the North East were meeting that day to discuss the situation arising out of the attacks on the youths of the region. The Commissioner of Delhi Police was also called to the venue and the three senior officials held detailed discussions with the youths of the region to know about the problems that they face in Delhi.
Sources revealed that one of the main complaints of the youths of the region is that very often police refuse to register complaints of racial remarks and attacks. To deal with the problem, the Government of India has decided to introduce a system of registration of complaints online. The system is likely to be put in place shortly. Moreover, special help lines would be opened for the youths of the region living in Delhi. The Government will also issue strict instructions to the police to act immediately after receiving any complaint of racial attack.
MHA sources said the Union Home Minister would soon hold a meeting with the youths of the North East living in Delhi to know about their feelings. Local people of Delhi will also be called to the meeting.
Sources said as reports of such attacks were received from Bengaluru also, similar meetings would be held there. However, it is still not decided whether the Home Minister would go there or any senior officer of the MHA would be sent to meet the youths of North East living there, sources added.
