MMC polls: Common platform held for Arkong ward
MOKOKCHUNG — A common platform event in view of the upcoming Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) elections for ward 3 (Arkong) was held at the Arkong Ward Community Hall, with two of the ward’s three candidates participating.
The candidates running for Arkong ward include Imtitoshi Pongen, representing the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party; A Bendang Jamir, an independent candidate; and Aongsen Aier, also running independently.
During the event, Pongen expressed his commitment to serving the people to the best of his ability. While he refrained from making promises, he stated that, if elected, he would prioritise transparency and accountability. Additionally, he pledged to collaborate closely with the ward authority and the community.
Meanwhile, independent candidate Jamir emphasised his commitment to opposing any law that could potentially infringe upon Article 371(A) during the implementation of the Nagaland Municipal Act.
Also, during the programme, the Arkong ward secretary read out the rules and guidelines pertaining to the election in the ward.
Aongsen Aier’s name omitted
It was learned that the third candidate, Aongsen Aier’s name, was not included in the list of speakers during the common platform programme. When questioned, the ward authority declined to comment on the omission.
Later, Aier, speaking with the media, expressed confusion and surprise at not being included in the list of candidates scheduled to address the public.
Aier recounted that a meeting was held last week with the ward authority, during which his candidature was thoroughly discussed and clarification was provided regarding his status as a candidate.
According to Aier, there might be some unresolved issues that led to his exclusion from addressing the programme.
He also appealed to the public not to be confused about his candidature and added that he understands the conditions in Arkong, which is why he is contesting.
