DIMAPUR — Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLA and chairperson of the NLA Committee on Environment and Climate Change, Achumbemo Kikon, on Monday held a detailed discussion with Deputy Commissioner of Shamator, Chubatemjen, and district officers at Shamator town.
In a press release, the NPF stated that the meeting focussed on town management, environmental protection and development, stressing the need to develop the new district headquarters into a model, eco-friendly township.
During the meeting, Kikon underlined the importance of coordinated efforts between the administration, elected representatives and the public to ensure planned growth.
He said Shamator, being a newly developed town, should be built better than older towns with special focus on cleanliness, scientific waste disposal, reduced smoke and ash generation, and environmentally sustainable practices.
The MLA emphasised that officers posted in the district should leave behind a positive legacy through good governance, transparency and public cooperation.
He assured officers of support from elected representatives, particularly in maintaining law and order and in addressing any issues requiring political intervention.
Kikon also reviewed issues related to human-animal conflict, river management and fishing practices, calling for sustainable use of natural resources.

He stressed the need to prevent pollution of rivers and to regulate fishing and hunting based on seasonal and community resolutions to protect biodiversity.
The MLA expressed concern over water scarcity, cautioning against indiscriminate well-boring, which he said was drying up traditional water sources.
He urged the administration to prioritise natural water sources, rainwater harvesting and planned water distribution, while sensitising the public about the long-term hazards of over-extraction of groundwater.
Highlighting climate change impacts, Kikon said erratic rainfall patterns were now being felt locally and called for greater public awareness and administrative preparedness.
He noted that environmental issues were no longer distant concerns but had reached people’s doorsteps, requiring immediate and collective action.
Kikon asked the district officials to formally submit their key requirements, particularly related to water and energy, to the concerned departments, with a copy marked to him.
He said he would raise these issues at the government level and press for necessary support, though he clarified that he had no direct sanctioning authority.
Further, the MLA also pointed out that essential services and resources should not be affected by the absence of local body elections, adding that a district must receive its due facilities regardless of electoral delays.
He concluded by urging officers to renew their commitment in the New Year and work towards making Shamator a model district that people would aspire to emulate.
Separately, the MLA also interacted with the president and colleagues of the Shamator Town Public Forum and later held discussions with the presidents and colleagues of the 11 wards and two colonies, highlighting the importance of public cooperation, civic responsibility and community participation in achieving sustainable development and good governance in the district.
