Mizoram’s Serchhip tops the country in maternity benefit programme; Manipur in 3rd position

Aizawl, Feb. 3 (PTI): Serchhip district of Mizoram has bagged the best performing district award in the country in implementing Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), a maternity benefit programme, an official said here on Monday.

Serchhip district Deputy Commissioner Dr Lalzirmawia Chhangte received the award from Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani at a function in New Delhi on Monday, he said.

The PMMVY was implemented in all the districts of the country in January 2017. Under the programme, a cash incentive of INR 5000 is provided directly to the bank account of pregnant women and lactating mothers for the first living child of the family, subject to fulfilling specific conditions relating to maternal and child health.

Since the scheme was launched, INR 77.66 lakhs were deposited in the accounts of 1,812 registered beneficiaries in Serchhip district, the official said.

State Social Welfare Minister Dr. K Beichhua congratulated the people of Serchhip district for topping in the country in implementing the PMMVY.

He also lauded the district administration and officials of child and women development department for their hard work in successfully implementing the scheme.

Social Welfare department, Government of Manipur, bagged the third position for exemplary performance in implementation of  Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) scheme.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Sikkim bagged the first and second position respectively.

Director Ngangom Uttam Singh and Deputy Secretary Dr. Sonia Oinam of state Social Welfare department received the award from Union Minister of  Women and Child Development Smriti Irani at an award function held in New Delhi on Monday, according to official sources in Imphal.

Union Minister Irani appreciated the improvement in enrolment which has increased from 29% to 71% during the last one year under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.

Lauding the department for the achievement, Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister Nemcha Kipgen said this was possible because of the collective efforts made by the officials, staff and line departments.

She encouraged all to continue striving hard for the welfare of the state through various schemes and programmes implemented by the government.

On behalf of the department, the minister extended gratitude to all the district commissioners, Health department, banks, India Post Office, Child Development project officers, supervisors, anganwadi workers, helpers for their active participation.

Altogether 30,481 beneficiaries have been enrolled in the state under PMMVY scheme. S

Special enrolment help desk were opened during “Matru Vandana Saptah” in all government hospitals, community health centres, public health centres, sub-centres and private hospitals for facilitating on spot registration for eligible beneficiaries.

PMMVY scheme aims to provide incentives of five thousand rupees to pregnant women and lactating mothers for first living child of the family in three instalments for the loss of wages of working women and to ensure their proper rest and nutrition during pregnancy. The payment of the incentive amount is deposited directly into the bank account.

The Matru Vandana Saptah is a week-long maternity benefit programme observed from from December 2 to 8th. 2019, to intensify the implementation of the scheme, create a healthy competition among states and Union Territories and felicitate for exemplary performance in implementation of PMMVY scheme.

In Manipur, the programme was observed till December 16, 2019 as advised by the Chief Minister, N Biren Singh in public interest.
