Mithun Mela held at Miren village, Arunachal

Miren, March 27 (EMN): A Mithun Mela cum Animal Health camp was held at Miren village in Arunachal Pradesh on 24th March 2017 organized by ICAR- NRC on Mithun, Medziphema, Nagaland which was inaugurated by Er. Tatung Jamoh, Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Fishery, Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking on the ocassion in a huge crowd including farmers, scientist and state veterinarians, Parliamentary Secretary said that mithun since time immemorial has been a part of all Arunachalee social events and ceremonies. He encouraged the farmers that they should increase awareness regarding scientific methods of rearing mithun and also exchange views and update their knowledge with the expert groups. He suggested the villagers to identify and spare 300 hectors of forest land without any dispute to set up mithun rearing conservation centre with proper fencing. Prof Premjit Singh, VC, CAU, Imphal was present in the Mela as Guest of Honour said that intervention to double the income of the farmers by 2022 is one of the Govt Plans and mithun is a very good crop which can give double the income to the famers within 2-3 years of rearing. Also speaking in the event, Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR- NRC on Mithun, Medziphema stressed upon the preservation of mithun and urged the Government to register mithun as food animal as it is basically reared for meat purpose. He said that mithun has got lot of potentialities including its milk, hide and draught capability.

Mithun owners from nearby villages brought their animals for health check up and got their animals vaccinated and ear tagged. Ear tagging was done for addressing the ownership disputes among the mithun farmers.
