Minor girl reportedly burn alive in Nagaon district

Various social organisations in Karbi Anglong have strongly condemned the alleged burning of a 12 year-old girl at Raha in Nagaon district on April 22.

Sources informed that the deceased minor Sumila Ronghangpi was staying as a domestic help in the house of one Prakash Chandra Borthakur, a retired bank employee at Roha in Nagaon district. It was alleged that on April 22, Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur tortured Sumila and then burnt her by pouring kerosene over her.

The 12 year-old Sumila is a daughter of Sarthe Ronghang of Kudam Ronghang village from West Karbi Anglong. She was staying at the Borthakur’s residence for about four years.

Sources informed that both Prakash Chandra Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur were arrested and a case no. 97/2021 has been registered with Nagoan police station under Section 120B/302 of IPC Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribe (Atrocities and Prevention Act).

Meanwhile, in Diphu various women, students and social organisations have condemned the incident and demanded immediate and appropriate action against the culprits.

Chairperson of women commission and member of autonomous council, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Seema Ronghangpi, while condemning the incident has demanded justice for the victim.

“It is a heinous crime committed by the Borthakur family by torturing Sumila Ronghangpi and killing her. It is learnt that Prakash Chandra Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur, while torturing Sumila, poured kerosene on her body and burned her alive,” Ronghangpi said on her facebook page.

Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) led by president Simeon Rongphar, Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum and United Karbi Anglong Women’s Association have also demanded a high level enquiry in the incident to punish the culprits. They have demanded trial by a fast track court and a compensation of INR 20 lakhs to the deceased’s family.

In Bokajan, Asom Jatiyatabadi Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Karbi Anglong District Committee (KADC) held a memorial for the deceased Surmila Ronghangpi. The AJYCP held at programme at 5:30 pm at Samson Sing Engti statue in Bokajan.

President of AJYCP KADC Jitu Phukon, while condemning the killing of the minor, said that the duo Prakash Borthakur and Nayanmoni Borthakur should be brought to justice. AJYCP also demanded compensation for the victim’s family.

It was informed that the minor’s body has reached her family home on Friday.

Chief executive member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang wrote on his Facebook page “Sent an assistance of INR 1,00,000 (One lac) rupees through Abhijt Kro, Ex-President, Nagaon Karbi Students’ Association to bring back the mortal remains of the 12 year-old girl Sonali Ronghangpi, daughter of Sarthe Ronghang and Basapi Kropi of Village Sar Kro Kudam Arong under Duar Amla Constituency, who was burned to death in Raha, Nagaon.”
