Just one month after Microsoft launched its new AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser, the company announced that its search engine has surpassed 100 million daily active users.

In a blog post, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President & Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, Yusuf Mehdi, expressed his excitement about the user feedback and iteration, which has resulted in significant improvements in Bing usage.

“We are pleased to share that after a number of years of steady progress, and with a little bit of a boost from the million+ new Bing preview users, we have crossed 100M Daily Active Users of Bing.  This is a surprisingly notable figure, and yet we are fully aware we remain a small, low, single digit share player.  That said, it feels good to be at the dance,” Mehdi wrote.

Additionally, the company is using the information gathered from Bing usage to shape its future product development. Of the millions of active users of the new Bing preview, around one-third are new to Bing. Mehdi says this validates Microsoft’s view that search needs reinvention, and the unique value proposition of combining “Search + Answers + Chat + Creation” in one experience is appealing to users.

Mehdi said that Microsoft attributes the growth in Bing usage to two factors. The first factor is the continued growth of Microsoft Edge usage, which is driving more people to use Bing. The second factor is the significant improvement in Bing’s search quality due to the introduction of the “Prometheus model,” resulting in a core web search ranking that is much more relevant.

As more people use the new Bing and Edge, Microsoft is seeing trial and adoption of new capabilities that demonstrate the value of an integrated “Search + Chat” experience. Mehdi tweeted that approximately one-third of daily preview users use Chat daily, with an average of three chats per session, and more than 45 million chats since the preview began.

Furthermore, 15% of Chat sessions involve Bing being used to generating new content, indicating that search is expanding to include creativity. Mehdi also noted that the new Bing is beginning to be used on mobile phones, with a “6X increase in daily active users since pre-launch levels.”
