Meta is set to release its own Twitter alternative called Threads later this week, specifically on July 6. Users can already pre-order the iOS version on the Apple App Store while Android users will get it soon as it has been spotted on Google Play Store as well.

The official name of the upcoming Twitter competitor is called “Threads, an Instagram app.” Interestingly, screenshots given on the app store show that Threads has likely been designed as an extension of Instagram, allowing users to sign up with their existing Instagram accounts. It retains usernames, followers, and other account information from Instagram.

Moreover, the app’s interface bears a striking resemblance to Instagram, prioritising text-based conversations. Users will find themselves familiar with various actions such as liking, commenting, reposting, and sharing posts, akin to their experiences on Instagram. Notably, this upcoming social networking app, positioning itself as an alternative to Twitter, introduces a core feature known as “threads” to enrich user engagement. Furthermore, users have the ability to incorporate images into their posts, offering a visually enhanced communication experience.

One interesting aspect of Threads is its use of a decentralised social media protocol called ActivityPub, also employed by Mastodon. This approach ensures that the app’s content is distributed across multiple servers, making it harder for any single entity to control or censor the content.

At present, Threads has unveiled a rudimentary webpage, lacking essential features like a login page and comprehensive information. The page primarily showcases a countdown alongside a QR code, conveniently directing users to the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. More information is expected to become available upon the app’s official release.

At present, Threads primarily targets iOS users due to open pre-orders, while a specific timeline for availability on Android devices has not been disclosed.
