KOHIMA: The 1st Unisex Marathon Race (12 km walk and run) to spread awareness on the ill effects of tobacco took place from Botsa to Gariphema on May 31.
The race was organised by Gariphema Village Student's Union (GVSU) as part of the observation of ‘World No tobacco Day’ and 9th anniversary of the declaration of Gariphema as ‘Tobacco-Free Village.’
It was held on the theme ‘Commit to quit. Yes to life. No to tobacco! Pledge to quit it.’
The event was sponsored by Gariphema Village Council, NCRC and Department of Health & Family Welfare.
After the marathon event, a short session was held at Gariphema Village Council hall with Dr. Neiphrezo Sorünuo, junior dental surgeon, Naga Hospital Authority Kohima, as the resource person.

Altogether, 30 youths from different parts of the state took part in the marathon race.
Wede T Mero (42min, 38 sec) from Chizami village under Phek district bagged the first position.
Taliyanger Ozukum(46min, 58sec) from Mokokchung district, Lhouvisalie Mere (48min, 30sec) from Kohima village and Atseibou Rüpreo (1hr, 6min) from Tsiemekhuma village, Kohima district, secured second, third and fourth positions respectively.
