Meghalaya govt to prepare progress report on achievements

PTI SHILLONG, APRIL 26 Stung by BJP president Amit Shah’s visit, the Congress high command today directed the Meghalaya government to prepare a progress-report on its achievements assuring its manifesto promises will be delivered. “I have asked Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and MPCC chief D D Lapang to prepare a progress report for 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 about the achievements of the government in various departments and their performances,” AICC general secretary in charge Meghalaya V Narayanasamy told reporters here. Narayanasamy was here since April 23, a day after Shah asked regional parties and the BJP in the state, to expose corruption in the Congress-ruled state. “It(report card) should be circulated through the party workers and leaders in the districts, blocks and booth level so that people can be educated and informed about what activities the government has done for the people,” Narayanasamy said. Some of the government’s performance and the manifesto are in the field of agriculture, health, education, social welfare and poverty programme and other infrastructure development were also highlighted by the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and ministers during the meeting. The AICC functionaries are on their three-day visit to the state in which meetings were convened for strengthening the party in the state besides reviewing the membership and giving assignments to office bearers of the party. During the visit, Narayanasamy reviewed the performance of the state government and the implementation of the manifesto released by the Congress before the 2013 Assembly elections. “I was quite happy with the implementation of programmes spelt out in the manifesto. We have also fixed a timeline for the implementation of the rest of the manifesto assurances,” he said. Stating that the main focus of the party was development, the AICC general secretary said “Since Meghalaya is an agriculture based state, agriculture should be given importance and tourism should also be properly promoted. Tourism is one area where lot of potential is available in Meghalaya, which the government can tap.” Besides, the Congress leader also stressed on the medium and small scale industries to create employment opportunities. “We are working out a plan to give focus on industrial development,” he said adding the focus was on technical institutions and universities, which would create skill development for Meghalaya’s students as well as workers. The BJP in the mean time said Shah’s visit to the state has charged up party workers. The visit also helped Shah to understand the issues related to the state, party leaders said adding they were willing to work overtime to expose the wrong doings of the Congress.
