Meet this single mother at the wheel delivering goods in Dimapur

Dimapur, Sep. 21 (EMN): Breaking the gender stereotypes, 24-year-old Tinkle Rai delivers packages for a courier company in Dimapur, a rare sight in the state.

On Monday, Eastern Mirror caught up with Rai when she was delivering a package in Nagarjan. Dressed comfortably in a pair of jeans, t-shirts and a cap, Rai, who appeared shy initially, slowly opened up about how she started the delivery job in Dimapur.

“A friend informed me about this job as I needed one, and with the support of my family, I appeared for the interview. The next day itself, I started to work,” she shared.

Hailing from Karagaon in Karbi Anglong, Rai informed that she travels everyday from Karagaon on her scooty to Dimapur to start her day with the courier company ‘Delhivery’.

“I reach office at around 8 am and start my day delivering packages all over Dimapur town; I reach back home in Karagaon by 7-8 pm at night,” said Rai.

A single mother to a three-year-old son, Rai shared that she lives with her older sister, younger brother and mother, who is a homemaker.

“My sister also used to deliver courier packages but has now stopped; I had no choice but to start working and this seemed fit for me,” said Rai, adding that she started working on August 29.

She shared that she doesn’t have a college degree but the job pays relatively well.

“It is not just me but the efforts of my boss and the whole team at Delhivery, they have given me guidance, encouragement and because of that I get confidence in doing this job,” said Rai.

Having previously worked as a saleslady at a popular store in Dimapur town, Rai shared that anybody, “be it a man or woman”, with the right people and support system, can do anything they put their heart to.

“For a single mother, it is very difficult to get a job but my family is my inspiration and they have supported me throughout. It is why I can stand on my own feet,” said Rai.

The sight of a woman delivering packages in Dimapur has attracted lot of attention online.

When asked if she was aware of her popularity, Rai said that her family had called her up one day to tell that there were some Facebook posts about her.

“I don’t know how and what to feel,” she said, adding that ‘it was all because of God’s love’.

“My bag, when filled, can weigh up to 25-30 kg but that is the requirement of the job; I thank God everyday for giving me the strength to continue,” maintained Rai.
