Dimapur, Nov. 9 (EMN): “And to my husband, Doug; our children, Cole and Ella; my sister, Maya; and our whole family — I love you all more than I can ever express,” said Kamala Harris while addressing the nation after scripting history to become the first woman US Vice President-elect on Saturday.

Americans and many others around the world may know Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff (Douglas Emhoff), as he was often seen with his wife during the election campaign, but many may not have even heard about him until the vice president-elect mentioned in her speech.

Born to Jewish parents in Brooklyn, New York, on October 13, 1964, Emhoff graduated from Agoura High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University at Northridge in 1987 and went on to get a degree in law from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1990.

The 56-year-old entertainment lawyer was previously married to Kerstin Mackin and they have two children — Cole and Ella – together. They, however, got divorced in 2008, ending their 16 years of marriage.

Emhoff met Harris in 2013 on a blind date set up by the latter’s friend. Harris was California’s attorney general then. They married on August 22, 2014, in Santa Barbara, California.

He shared a photo taken on their wedding day on the occasion of their six-year anniversary in August this year.

Emhoff was in news last year when he jumped in after a protester grabbed the microphone from his wife Harris and refused to leave the state at an event, according to a report by CNN.

He took leave from DLA Piper in the month of August after it was announced that his wife would be President-elect Joe Biden’s running mate in the United States presidential election 2020, in order to concentrate in the election campaign.

He was there to support his wife throughout the campaign trail. “So proud of you,” he tweeted along with a photograph of him with his wife after the result of the elections was clear on November 7.

As Kamala Harris, the first time Senator, breaks the glass ceilings by becoming the first woman, Black and Indian-American vice president of the United States, her husband Emhoff will break his own new ground. He is set to become the first Second Gentleman and the first Jewish spouse of a president or vice president of the country.

This is what he sums up himself on his Twitter account: ‘Dad, Kamala Harris’ hubby, lawyer, wannabe golfer, advocate for justice and equality.’
