Dimapur, December 19

A high-mast street lighting system has been constructed in Medziphema town. The more-than-15 meters high light system was inaugurated on December 18 by Parliamentary Secretary for Urban Development Zhaleo Rio.
The lighting project was implemented and constructed at the cost of Rs.15 lakhs under the State Plan. The construction was started on July 18 this year. The work was completed on December 14.
The high-mast street lighting system is 20 meters in height. The purpose of the lighting system is to “beautify” Medziphema town, a sub-division under Dimapur district and prevent accidents. The national highway runs right through the town. The lighting system has possibly increased safety for motorists as well as for pedestrians, the office of Urban Development’s parliamentary secretary stated today.
Also a traffic stand replete with a road sign has been constructed to provide drivers with information when trying to locate their destinations.
In his speech during the inauguration programme on Wednesday, Zhaleo Rio appealed to the people of Medziphema and the public in general to take good care of the lighting system in the interest of the public. He assured the public that such more lighting systems and road signage will be set up in and around Medziphema town.
The parliamentary secretary also expressed gratitude to the department of Urban Development for initiating and implementing the project with the public’s safety in mind. The management and proper maintenance of the lighting system is the responsibility of the Medziphema Town Council, the parliamentary secretary stated.
Officials from the Urban Development department highlighted the important functions of high-mast street lighting systems during the function.
