Media workshop on organic farming held in Manipur

Imphal, April 4 (EMN): A two-day media workshop on ‘Role of media in organic farming’, organised by Khelen Thokchom Trust and sponsored by Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) was held at Landan, Churachandpur district, Manipur on April 3 and 4th.
On day one of the workshop, chairman Chongtham Shanta of Chakhao Poireiton Organic Farmers Producer Company, Sagoltongba and project officer of MOMA, Dr. L Jeebit spoke on Chakhao poireiton, organic farming and value addition.
On the second day, a team of journalists from five districts of the state visited Bunglon village, 40 km south of Imphal in Churachandpur district and interacted with the farmers of Khousabung and Bunglon villages.
Alex, a pineapple cultivator informed that the production of organic pineapple from his small plot of farmland at his native Bunglon village improved a lot after MOMA’s intervention.
“The size of the pineapple increased, apart from getting at least a few marketing facilitie”, Alex said while responding to a question by the journalists.
Vicky, another pineapple cultivator of the village, who owns a pineapple farm also shared similar sentiments along with farmers of the neighbouring village, Khousabung.
Last year, 10 metric tons of organic pineapples produced from Khousabung and Bunglon areas were sold under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region initiatives, according to technical officer Hatnejim Haokip of Clover Organic Pvt. Ltd., Dehradun.
It may be mentioned that the variety of pineapple kew (big size) and queen (small size) are produced on a commercial scale in Manipur.
Nearly 30 journalists from Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Ukhrul districts participated in the two-day event.
