Mokokchung, Oct. 4 (EMN): Young Boys produced a spirited fight back to salvage a 2-2 draw with SSS Blue while Revolution FC and YA Marepkong played out a 1-1 draw in the league round of the MDFA trophy at the Imkongmeren Sports Complex in Mokokchung on Friday, October 4.
Midfielder Tepongmeren’s two goals saved Young Boys to level the score 2-2 with SSS Blue in the first match of the day.
SSS Blue goalkeeper was quickly tested in a free kick in the 28th minute when midfielder Tepongmeren, fired off a shot from the edge of the box, however, the keeper could not tip off the ball and landed inside the net.
Young Boys 1-0 lead was soon tested when SSS Blue returned the favour in a vigorous offensive after the break.
SSS Blue found a way to score twice in the second half.
SSS Blue equaliser came in the form of a penalty in the 49th minute when they took advantage inside the penalty area and a forward player was brought down. Chubanungsang took the shot and settled to make it 1-1.
Three minutes later, SSS Blue again doubled the score to make it 2-1. A free-kick was awarded to the blues near the edge of the box in the 52nd minute. The shot was taken but the deflected ball from the goalkeeper landed in the boots of midfielder Imchapok and he swiftly converted into a goal.
A lead advantage for SS Blue sparked the Young Boys to fight back in the last stoppage-time and attempted several long shots. Tepongmeren scored again to make it 2-2 in the 58
th minute.
Young Boys were awarded a penalty advantage when their player was brought down. Tepongmeren clinically finished the penalty shot with an opportunistic finish.
Young Boys thought they had claimed the match when they scored again in the last minute but the referee flagged offside and SSS Blue had a narrow escape.
Senmoaba, Temjenyuba and Akangjungshi of SSS Blue and Kilangkumba of Young Boys received yellow cautions during the match.
In the second match, striker Tarepnungsang brilliant goal in the 22
nd minute tied YA Marepkong 1-1 draw for Revolution FC.
Revolution was unable to stop Marepkong offensive in the beginning of the first half. Midfielder Merenlemba created the first lead for Marepkong when his teammates lobbed a ball across the defence line.
Revolution’s Keeper tried to snatch away the ball but failed and Merenlemba rammed the ball to the net in the 12
th minute to make it 1-0.
However, Revolution side scored the equaliser in the 22
nd minute. Tarepnungsang send a hard shot from a long distance near the box and sent the ball to the nets to make it 1-1. Both the teams struggled to outclass the other till the last minutes of the game.
