MOKOKCHUNG — KSUM triumphed over Team Gilgat 2-1 to make it to the final of the ongoing MDFA Trophy 2024 at Imkongmeren Sports Complex, Mokokchung on Saturday.
KSUM got off to an early start as David Konyak gave them the lead in the second minute of the game. KSUM dominated the early proceedings. Team Gilgal pushed hard to get the equaliser, managing to hit the top of the goalpost twice in the first half itself.
KSUM managed to get a two-goal lead before the end of the first half from a corner; an attempt to clear the corner from one of the Gilgal players landed perfectly on the feet of Alei Konyak, who shot from outside of the box and scored a stunning goal in the 25th minute.
But six minutes later, Team Gilgal managed to score a goal through Ato Chopi.
In the second half, Gilgal gathered momentum and made forays into the rival's pitch but KSUM put up a formidable defence.
Team Gilgal can consider themselves unlucky as they hit the post on three different occasions. The game was physical, with both teams putting in their all and seeing a total of five yellow cards, two for Gilgal and three for KSUM.
KSUM will now meet either Telongjem FC or Super Seniors FC in the final.
The fourth and final quarter-final between Telongjem FC and Eastern Wing was a one-sided affair, with defending champions Telongjem FC humiliating their opponents 6–0
One of the best players of the ongoing MDFA trophy, Japtheth Kath, completed a hattrick, scoring in the 29th, 82nd and 90+2 minutes. Keyi Puakleube, Noklensunep and Menguzelie Rutsa added a goal each.
Telongjem will now face Super Senior in the semifinal slated for Oct. 28.
