Matthew McConaughey was ‘perfect’ for interstellar role, says Nolan
Christopher Nolan has described Matthew McConaughey as ‘perfect’ for the central role in his new film Interstellar.
McConaughey and Nolan team up for the first time with the new sci-fi film, which sees the Oscar winner take on the role of Cooper, who leads a space exploration to find another planet for the human race to inhabit.
Nolan has heaped praise on McConaughey calling him a ‘great actor’ and revealed that he was the one who threw his name in the mix for the latest leading role.
Speaking to Empire magazine, Nolan said: “I had seen an early cut of Mud because my friend Aaron Ryder produced it. At the time, people hadn’t yet figured out what a great actor Matthew is. So we raised a few eyebrows when we first brought his name up.
“But the thing with Matthew is, once you realise what a great actor he is, it’s like a switch being flipped. You can’t get enough of the guy at that point. He’s so perfect for the part and I was in a position where fortunately I had a lot of power to cast who I wanted.
“And then, thank goodness, his career just went from strength to strength, and he won the Oscar. So I looked like the smartest guy in the room!”
It is always exciting when a Christopher Nolan movie is on the horizon and this is his first directorial outing since the box office success of The Dark Knight Rises back in the summer of 2012. Interstellar is one of the most anticipated films of the year, and looks set to be both a critical and commercial success.
In some circles, Interstellar is being tipped as a possible Oscar contender, but only time will tell if it is set to be in the mix at the beginning of next year.
As you would expect with a Nolan film, the director has brought together a great cast as Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck, Wes Bentley, and Michael Caine all star alongside McConaughey.
Interstellar is the first big screen outing for McConaughey since his Oscar triumph for Dallas Buyers Club earlier this year, and looks set to be another major hit for the popular actor.
