Dimapur, April 29 (EMN): A massive fire broke out at East Block colony in Burma Camp, Dimapur on Wednesday midnight, killing one person and burning down 123 houses.
A police officer confirmed that they received a call at around 12:10 am on Thursday about the fire incident. They rushed to the location soon after receiving the call but “almost all the residential area was on fire” by the time they reached.
It was informed that most of the people residing in the ‘kutcha’ house gutted by the inferno are daily wage earners and labourers.
The police officer said that short circuit might not be the cause of the fire as the residents informed that there was no electricity in the locality when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire could not be ascertained yet.
The caretaker of the area where the fire incident took place informed that around 123 families, mostly labourers and daily wage earners were affected by the fire.
Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services also informed through a press release that its team from Fire Station Dimapur (Central) and Fire Station Dimapur (West) along with four fire fighters and necessary equipment were pressed into action on receiving the fire call.
One person (male) aged 25 years was burned to death and property worth INR 50 lakh was lost in the inferno.
It added that the fire response team led by Duty Commander SI Bonom Konyak and SI Thungathung T Shitiri took three hours to douse the blaze and managed to prevent from spreading further to other houses in the vicinity, and thus salvaged property worth INR 80 lakh.
The Fire department added that another fire incident took place at Duncan Basti in Dimapur on Wednesday afternoon, destroying one ‘kutcha’ house and a Maruti Gypsy. The inferno, which was caused by a kitchen fire, reportedly destroyed property worth INR 4 lakh.
