Imphal, Oct. 31 (EMN): Thousands of people belonging to different communities living in Manipur staged a mass public rally for peace, unity and, integrity here under the aegis of United Committee Manipur (UCM).
The rally started from Tiddim ground near Imphal airport in Imphal west district before noon and converged at Khuman Lampak sports complex for a public meeting in the afternoon after passing through important routes in Imphal.
Most of the speakers belonging to diverse communities in the meeting expressed the need to protect the unity and integrity of the state besides reaffirming their stand for a united Manipur.
The rally was organised to let Manipur live and grow together, to protect the territorial integrity of Manipur, according to UCM. Later the public meeting resolved to oppose any move to disturb the age old unity and integrity of the different communities in Manipur.
The state police take up necessary security measures in and around Imphal town during the course of the day’s rally. Normal life was affected in and around Imphal town during the rally as commercial centres and educational institutions remained closed while vehicles were off the road.
Similarly, normal life in some hill districts was also affected today in view of the 12-hour bandh by United Naga Council under its jurisdiction demanding solution to the Naga political problems at the earliest. The bandh concluded at 6 pm, reports reaching here said.
