Dimapur, May 27 (EMN): The recent attack on a Northeast-bound Shramik special train in Bihar has raised alarm over the safety of Northeast citizens travelling back to their home states amid nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of Covid-19.
Member of Parliament and six-time world boxing champion MC Mary Kom in a letter to the Union minister of Railways, Piyush Goyal on May 25, stated that the attack on the train ferrying stranded people has “traumatised the students and families” who were onboard the train. She added that the trains were being stopped frequently and there “is no more/enough water and food supply.”
Mary Kom further requested the union minister to address the matter “to avoid any untoward incidents and unnecessary panicking.”
Eastern Mirror had earlier reported about a group of unidentified people broking into the Shramik special train from Gurugram in Haryana that was carrying stranded citizens of the Northeast at Danapur railway station in Bihar on May 24.
The unidentified people had broken windows and tried to force their way into the train. An eyewitness also reported that the police even assaulted the passengers and had threatened to shoot them if they didn’t open the doors.
The Shramik special train from Gurugram was carrying around 426 stranded citizens from Nagaland, and had arrived at Dimapur railway station on May 25.
Further, according to a social media update by Piyush Goyal on May 23, the Indian railways is expected to run 2,600 Shramik special trains to transport 36 lakh stranded persons in the next 10 days.
