Just weeks after it was announced that she has separated from her husband of six years Nick Cannon, some fans of the songbird have called for her to retire after she put on a dodgy vocal display on her current tour.
The 44-year-old kicked off her Elusive Chanteuse (classic modest Mariah) world tour in Tokyo, Japan this weekend, and naturally videos of the arena show hit YouTube. Unfortunately, the perfect pitch we have come to expect from Miss Carey seemed to have gone AWOL.
The songstress, who has a five-octave vocal range, struggled to reach any of the high notes in My All, as well as sounding shaky on Hero. Mariah also battled with microphone difficulties, with her gigantic butterfly ornament falling off her mic stand during her rendition of We Belong Together, causing the singer to tell the audience: “I can’t go on.” The patchy performance put on by the best selling artist female artist of the last millennium has caused some fans to claim that Mariah has started to lose her iconic voice.
One disappointed Twitter user commented: “I don’t get how Mariah Carey went from one of the greatest voice of all time to sounding the way she does now”, while another wrote: “I love Mariah Carey but I think she should retire... She’s ruining her voice with every note she sings.”
The 23-song Elusive Chanteuse tour is set to travel to South Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Phillippines and Thailand, before moving on to Australia and New Zealand. There have been no UK dates announced so far.
Mariah’s husband Nick confirmed that the couple had separated several months ago, and the rapper has already replaced a tattoo of his wife’s name on his back with a gigantic Jesus Christ depiction.
