DIMAPUR — In commemoration of the National Day of the Girl Child, the district administration and District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), Longleng, organised a marathon on Monday on the theme “I came, I ran, I finished”.

The event was part of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) week-long campaign in observance of the National Day of the Girl Child in Longleng, according to an update from the DIPR, which also mentioned that deputy commissioner of Longleng, Dharam Raj, flagged off the race.

SDO (C) and nodal officer, BBBP Longleng, Meyazungba Jamir, speaking on the occasion, said that girls are outperforming boys in education in Nagaland and that women will eventually dominate the state in education because knowledge is power and education will overcome any shortcomings.

“Beti Bachao Beti Padhao,” which translates to “Save the Girl Child and Elevate the Girl Child in Every Aspect,” emphasises the importance of introspection and contemplation, he said and added that it is a family’s responsibility to offer opportunities for their girl child and educate her about her rights, as understanding one’s rights is crucial.

“Man needs to support women, and it is our responsibility to ensure that their rights are protected in addition to providing for their education,” he said.

The race started at NST Junction, proceeded to Lempong Junction, and then returned to NST Junction. Eimei Angloi C from Shauli Ward secured the first position, while Yunglei L from PPC Ward and C. Chunggoi from Bahonk Ward claimed the second and third positions, respectively, it said.

Meanwhile, in another update, it was mentioned that the district administration and DHEW Longleng will be celebrating National Day of the Girl Child on January 24 at DPDB Hall, DC Complex, Longleng.
