DIPHU, OCTOBER 28

Even as the impact of 1000-hour Karbi Anglong district bandh continued to tremendously affect the normal life in the district, many organizations have opposed the bandh. The district administration along with Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Police, various political parties, senior citizens and journalists made an appeal to the Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) to review its stand to carry on with the agitation considering the hardship faced by the common people. They also termed such agitation as ‘unconstitutional and illegal’ in view of the Supreme Courts standing order.
Earlier, Prasanta Buragohain, the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong personally requested the JACAS to withdraw the strike but to no avail.
Meanwhile, BJP, Congress,Hill State Democratic Party (HSDP) and many other political parties directly opposed the bandh culture
Meanwhile, the administration has taken up stringent security measures in view of the JACAS 1000-hour bandh. Security forces in Karbi Anglong district. So far there was no report of any bandh related untoward incident.
All the offices both government and private have been affected by the JACAS agitation. Educational institutions have also been hit hard by the agitation. The only activity noticed in the district is the police escorting goods trucks bound for Nagaland and Manipur along the National Highway 39 and NH 36.
Meanwhile, Diphu Town Committee through a notice has ordered to all retail and wholesalers of Diphu town to open their shops immediately. It has warned that the competent authority will cancel their trading licences and business registration certificates for violation of rules and infringement of Supreme Court’s order. Public Prosecutor Upen Dutta while mentioning about the Supreme Court verdict said that any person considered as corroborator of the strike which may infringe fundamental right of the citizens including government employees who are abstaining from duty is liable to face legal consequence for contempt of order passed by the highest Court of the nation.
It is worth noting here that Union minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju had said there was no plan to create any new state either full-fledged or autonomous state by the BJP-led NDA government at the moment.
Kiren Rijiju had snubbed the Hill State Democratic Party (HSDP) over the demand for the creation of a separate State when the latter had met the Union minister a few days ago. HSDP and the Karbi Anglong district unit of the Congress have been demanding the creation of a separate state while JACAS is demanding the creation of an autonomous State.
