Imphal, July 13 (EMN):
Minister for Water Resources, Youth Affairs and Sports, Letpao Haokip laid the foundation stone of an eco-tourism destination at Lonpinu Gamvet Mol, Lonpi village in Chandel district of Manipur on Sunday afternoon, according to DIPR Manipur.

To be set up at a cost of INR 50 lakh, the project is jointly sponsored by Minister Letpao, who is the local MLA of the area, and the department of Tourism.

Speaking at the event, the minister said, ‘The hill here is naturally beautiful and climbing on top the hill, where the tourism destination is supposed to be set up offers a 360 degree aerial view of the various sites of Manipur including Churachandpur, Ukhrul, the central plains, and parts of Myanmar’.

The minister said that the then Manipuri King Gambhir Singh came up to this hill during the war and along with the village king of Lonpi declared that the Manipuri territory will be till what the eyes could see towards Burma from this hill. Because of this, the hill is also known as ‘Lamyeng Ching’.

The new tourist destination at Lonpi also called Monpi will have four lodging houses and one long dormitory to cater to the needs of the visitors and for night stays. For ensuring smooth and safe hill climb till the top for visitors of all ages, a staircase with one-sided railing for support will be constructed at the earliest. The eco-tourism destination will be managed on the basis of public-private partnership, the minister added.
