Imphal, Sep. 17 (EMN): A three-day Wa-Bamboo exhibition is being organised in connection with the World Bamboo Day 2022 at the premises of the Gandhi Memorial Hall in Imphal. World Bamboo Day 2022 will be celebrated across the state on Sunday (Sep. 18).

The Wa-Bamboo exhibition, which has a limited number of stalls, was inaugurated by Assistant Mission Director of National Bamboo Mission, Manipur, N Somorendro.

The World Bamboo Organisation’s former President Kamesh Salam and Bamboo Forum of India’s Coordinator Sukumar Haobam were also present during the formal inauguration in Imphal.

The Bamboo Development Promotion Organisation and Bamboo Forum of India will be organising the World Bamboo Day 2022 at the Gandhi memorial hall in Imphal while Manipur State Bamboo Mission, Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Northeast Centre for Technology Application and Reach, and South Asia Bamboo Foundation will be organising the event at IBSD premises in the outskirts of Imphal on Sep. 17.

India, which is the second largest producer of bamboo in the world, continues to import huge amount of incense sticks (made out of bamboos) from Vietnam and China due to lack of knowledge on commercial cultivation of bamboo species (to substitute wood in mitigating pressure on natural forests).India reportedly consumes 3 billion incense sticks daily.

Only about 10 bamboo species including Saneibi, Khok, Watang, Maribob species out of 55 bamboo species found in Manipur(86 species in Northeast) are suitable for housing purposes even though other species are fit for walling etc. Northeastern states contribute about 54% of India’s bamboo production.
