Manipur has received one of the highest numbers of national awards for the best electoral practices for its outstanding performance in the conduct of elections during 2022 in different spheres, according to officials.

Addressing 13th National Voters’ Day celebration in Imphal on Wednesday, the state chief electoral officer (CEO) N Praveen also disclosed that Manipur has the highest number of national-level awardees, out of thirteen awardees selected from across the states.

The three national awards received by Manipur are best security management, best innovative measures and best government department.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the national awards for the best electoral practices to state and district level officers for their outstanding performances in the conduct of elections during 2022 in different spheres on the occasion of 13th National Voters’ Day, organised by the Election Commission of India, in New Delhi.

Superintendent of Police Shivanand Surve of Churachandpur district, received the best security management award while district electoral officer Thokchom Kirankumar of Imphal West district and Central Bureau of Communication, Regional Office Imphal, bagged the best innovative measures and best government department awards, respectively.

Meanwhile, congratulating the SP Churachandpur for getting the award, the district administration in a social media post wrote, “Understanding various aspects of elections and electoral dynamics of multi-ethnic Churachandpur district, particularly security management, has not been pleasant as it seems, but a challenging experience. However, for those who tactfully and determinedly manoeuvered the complexities, smooth tackling of the situation yields a harvest of pride moment.”

“The National Award was presented to the SP of Churachandpur for his outstanding performance in the conduct of last year’s Manipur Legislative Assembly elections. This, indeed, is another great achievement for the District and State,” it added

Like Manipur, Himachal Pradesh also received three national awards while Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Punjab, Goa, Gujarat and New Delhi bagged one award each.

Since 2011, National Voters’ Day has been celebrated on January 25 every year to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (January 25, 1950) and also to create electoral awareness amongst citizens and encourage them to participate in the electoral process.
