Manipur top police officer shoots himself with service gun

Imphal, July 18 (EMN): A top officer of the Manipur Police department allegedly shot himself with a service gun in Imphal on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The incident took place at the official quarters of the officer in Imphal at around 1.30 pm on July 18. The injured senior police officer was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Imphal for medical treatment.

The officer has been identified as Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arvind Kumar of Manipur Police department.

Manipur Chief Secretary J Suresh Babu and officials from the Police department rushed to the private hospital where the top officer was undergoing treatment.

Meanwhile, the chief secretary, after visiting the injured senior police officer, told reporters at the hospital gate that it was an 'unfortunate incident.'

He however said that the injured officer ‘is conscious and able to respond’; adding that he will be shifted to Delhi once his condition is stable.

The reason behind the incident could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report.
