IMPHAL – Manipur government has decided to convene the legislative assembly either in the last part of second week of August or in the early part of the third week of August this year.

This was informed by Manipur’s Information and Public Relations minister, Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, during a press conference in Imphal on Thursday.

When asked about the number of sittings of the assembly, Dr. Ranjan, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, replied that it would be decided by the business advisory committee.

Clarifying to media reports on attack of BJP MLA, Vungzagin Valte, by a mob and his subsequent hospitalisation in New Delhi in early part of May, Dr. Ranjan appealed to the concerned to verify the facts before jumping into any conclusions stating that the state government has been assisting the MLA and his family from the day of fateful incident.

“The government has been helping and monitoring his health conditions after he was airlifted from Imphal to New Delhi by arranging air ambulance,” he said adding that Apollo hospital (Delhi) was chosen for treatment.

He stated that the state Education minister and BJP state president have been sent to look after his conditions in Delhi and added that the expenditure incurred for his treatment would be borne by the state.

On Wednesday, a five-Congress legislators delegation led by Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former chief minister, O Ibobi Singh, called on the Manipur Governor, Anusuiya Uikey, at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal and urged her to convene an emergency session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly under article 174(1) of the Constitution of India to discuss the gravity of the present turmoil in the state to find an everlasting solution.

After the Congress legislators’ meeting, representatives of 10 like-minded political parties also met the Governor on Wednesday and requested to convene a special session of Manipur Legislative Assembly to discuss the on-going crisis and explore the ways and means to solve the issue through a peaceful and amicable dialogue.

The 10 political parties included Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India-Marxist, Janata Dal (United), All India Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party, Shiv Sena state unit (UBT), Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party and Aam Aadmi Party.
