Manipur targets to plant 65,000 tree saplings across 1000 educational institutions

Imphal, June 3 (EMN): Manipur Education department in collaboration with the Forest department and All Manipur Working Journalist Union (AMWJU) geared up for mass tree plantation drive  across 1000 educational institutions in Manipur on the World Environment Day.

“The mass tree plantation is aimed to achieve the target of planting more than 65,000 saplings in and around the educational institutions throughout the state,” said director of Education department Th Kirankumar.

The main focus of the plantation drive is to make sure that the saplings planted on the occasion are properly nurtured till its maturity, the director said.

Education Minister Th Radheshyam is scheduled to launch the mass tree plantation at the S Ideal High School, Ngairangbam of Imphal west district zone-1.

The major thrust of the mass tree plantation is to monitor each sapling and to make sure that each planted saplings attains maturity. The regular monitoring of the saplings will be tasked to the teachers and students of the educational institutions.

A survey for the saplings planted on the occasion will be carried out during the festival of Van Mahotsav in July and in November to verify the number of surviving saplings.

A school each from 17 educational zones are selected to be a part of the inaugural programme of tree plantation on June 5.

Around 80 colleges will be participating in the mass tree plantation drive.
