Manipur: Tamenlong holds pre-World Environment Day

Imphal, June 5 (EMN): With mass tree plantation drive at Gadai Hill range at the catchment area of Tamenglong’s water reservoir, a pre-World Environment Day celebration was started at Tamenglong district headquarters on June 4.

The event was organised by The Rainforest Club, Tamenglong in collaboration with district administration, Tamenglong Forest Division and The Corbett Foundation.

Mass tree plantation was headed by local MLA Janghemlung Panmei accompanied by  Tamenglong Forest Division official Hitler Singh, Rohit Anand, SDOs Paul Nangsha (Tamenglong), Honorary Wildlife Warden and Advisor to RCT Dr. Chambo Gonmei. 

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Janghemlung encouraged the people of Tamenglong to do more plantations of trees. Mentioning the importance of protecting trees in the catchment areas of the water reservoir for water resources, he said that the World Environment Day theme ‘Only One Earth’ is an appropriate theme for Tamenglong.

This pre-event of mass tree plantation was conducted in preparation for the main event of World Environment Day that will be celebrated at the district headquarters, 150 km west of state capital Imphal on June 5.

Meanwhile, the National Service Scheme, National Cadet Corps of Rayburn College, Gangpimual, in association with Churachandpur Forest department organised a tree plantation drive on the occasion at Rayburn College campus on Saturday.

As a part of the campaign, a solemn programme was organised in the campus, attended by the district SP Shivanand Surve; Divisional Forest Officer, Esther Laltankim Serto; Range Forest Officer,Lunkhomang T Haokip; principal, deans, faculties and students from various departments.

Speaking on the occasion, DFO Esther urged the participants of the event ‘to protect the world we live in, rejuvenate our only earth and take the initiative to promote afforestation’. “The theme of this year’s environment day is ‘Only One Earth’ and we must come together to make efforts to make our planet clean and green for generations to come”, she added.
