Imphal, April 28 (EMN): Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), a premier medical institute in Northeast India located in Imphal, has started producing oxygen at its manufacturing plant.
Informing this, RIMS director Prof. A Santa Singh said that the institute has started to produce D type oxygen or Jumbo cylinders from April 24 onwards. The plant at RIMS would generate oxygen from the atmosphere.
RIMS, which is figured amongst the 40 top medical institutions and universities of India, under the supervision of Prof. Santa have installed five PSA (pressure swing absorption) oxygen generator plants. Each generator can produce around 10 jumbo cylinders.
“Now, RIMS will have the capacity of producing around 50 jumbo cylinders of oxygen per day on its own,” Prof. Santa said adding that many experts have appreciated the initiatives as the institute started the plant much ahead of Covid situation.
RIMS, which is ranked 38th position in National Institutional Ranking Framework on Human Resource Development (NIRF) in 2019-20 as released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, government of India, is also currently harvesting water for its sustainable use by using different innovative ideas. Earlier, RIMS which has a bed strength of about 1176, used to buy water tankers from various private operators for its daily use.
RIMS which becomes the only medical institute having sports medicine in Post-Graduate disciplines in the entire NE India, has produced 3,454 doctors, 1842 specialists, 61 clinical psychologists and 115 bachelor of dental surgery doctors besides 193 B.Sc nursing since its establishment.
On Monday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh accompanied by top officials of the state health authority inspected the oxygen generator plant at RIMS after visiting another oxygen manufacturing plant which is under construction at the state run JNIMS hospital in Imphal.
Meanwhile, Manipur reported 259 new Covid-19 positive cases, the highest ever single day spike in the state this year, taking the state’s total infection tally to 31,001 besides increasing the total number of active cases to 1230, officials said.
The new positive cases were from 12 districts of the state, as per a press release by Dr. Kh Sasheekumar, spokesperson of the state health department on Wednesday.
Two more persons expired due to Covid-19 at three hospitals in Imphal in the last 24 hours. As a result, the state’s total cumulative number of deaths increases 395, it said.
As of Wednesday, 6,6,3669 persons were screened at the entry points of the state, while 6,09,910 persons were tested for Covid 19 at the various testing centres in the state.
So far a total of 1,47,012 persons including healthcare workers and frontline workers in Manipur got the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine. On the other hand, altogether 65,911 healthcare workers and frontline workers received a second dose of vaccines.
