Manipur ranks 4th in domestic violence cases in the country

Even though indigenous women are among higher status in comparison with mainstream culture and societies, Manipur ranks fourth in incidences of domestic violence cases in the national statistics in 2005 and crimes against women in the public domain are on the riise, according to a booklet on various women related laws and policies distributed to the general public on International Women’s Day (IWD) observation in Manipur on Sunday.Stating this in its introduction, an information booklet on ‘Women’s rights and laws related to Women’ which was released on the occasion of the observation of International Women’s Day today at South Lousing hill, Chingnungkhok under Lamlai police station about 16 km north of Imphal, said that but the fact remains that the urgency of the issue of violence against women in Manipur is of gravest concern that cannot be ignored anymore.
Recognising the need for women to be aware of the existing mechanisms for the redressal of their grievances, the booklet is published by the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) related IWD, sources said.
The booklet which has been sourced from existing literature on women for the upliftment of women for a better tomorrow leadinhg a life with dignity and mutual respect, highlights constitutional and legal provisions for women in India, list of women related laws in India etc.
With the global theme of IWD 2015 is ‘Make it happen-encouraging effective action for advancing and recognizing women,’ the observation cum legal awareness programme was held from March 7 and 8 at Chingnungkhok was organized by Folksy Triumph in collaboration with the indigenous perspectives, Ereima Gender Empowerment and Resources centre supported by the MASLSA.
The awareness programme include a series of events such as rock concert,poster campaigns, cycle rally, activities for young children etc, honouring women who have been working for upliftment of the society in their own respective profession.
It may be worth mentioning here that the first IWD was held in 1911. Since then thousands of events occur to mark the economic,political and social achievements of women, organizations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations and the media celebrates the day.
