The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the police custodial death of Thoudam Digbijoy Singh sponsored 48 hours Mayai Lambi (Imphal-Mayang Imphal Road) bandh in Manipur turned into ugly situation after the protestors tried to attack the Wangoi Police Station with petrol bombs, sources said. In return, Police also reportedly fired a number of tear gas shells to disperse the protestors.
Prior to attack at the police station, the angry protestors also burned down the effigy of the Officer-in-Charge of the Wangoi Police Station, N Munal and demanded termination of the officer from the service.
Earlier in the day, JAC had a sit-in-protest at the Wangoi bazar demanding immediate and necessary action against the ‘careless’ police officials and also the women who eloped with Digbijoy.
The protestors have been demanding justice into the suspicious death of one Thoudam Digvijay (37), son of Nabakumar of Wangoi Makha Leikai who was found dead in the custody of Wangoi Police Station on Wednesday.
Police sources said Digbijoy was found hung to death inside the custody. However, the family of the deceased and locals rejected the story.
The womenfolk in the day’s agitation also demanded for a proper investigation to bring justice besides taking necessary action against Police personnel involved in the incident.
Sources said that Additional Superintendent of Police, L Sanajaoba of Imphal West district has been conducting an inquiry into the incident.
