- IMPHAL — Two
senior representatives of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) and
former MLAs namely Md Fajur Rahman and Md Amin Shah left for New Delhi on Sunday
to file a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the recently enacted Waqf
(Amendment) Act, 2025.
- The contentious legislation, which was cleared by both the
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, has drawn strong criticism from the Congress party
nationwide.
- The former chief minister and Congress Legislature Party
(CLP) leader, Okram Ibobi Singh, conveyed this while speaking to media persons
in Imphal on Sunday.

- “Congress party right from day-1 had a clear stand to oppose
this Bill because India is a secular country,” said Ibobi Singh who represents
Thoubal assembly constituency.
- Accusing the BJP-led central government of systematically
eroding the secular fabric of the Constitution, Ibobi also admitted that the
Congress party has already filed multiple petitions in the Supreme Court in
relation to the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
- The MPCC president, K Meghachandra, also shared a similar
sentiment and declared that the Congress party would continue to resist any
attempt to distort the identity of the nation and its constitutional values.
- The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has sparked controversy
across the country, with opposition parties alleging that it dilutes the rights
of minority communities and undermines the constitutional commitment to
secularism.
- In Manipur, Meitei Pangal (Muslim) community has been
staging protest marches against the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025
at different areas of the state.
- Manipur legislator from Kshetrigao assembly constituency,
Sheikh Noorul Hassan, had already reiterated that he would challenge the Waqf
Amendment Act, 2025, in the Supreme Court.
