Imphal, Aug. 30 (EMN): Two young female boxers, Athiphro Genevieve of Punanamei village in Senapati district and Thotyola Ronru Shimray of L Phungdhar village in Ukhrul district, will vie for gold medal in the final of the 2nd edition of Manipur Olympic Games today.
In their semi-final bout on Sunday, 19-year-old Athiphro, daughter of Kh Kolo Mao, beat Toijam Bhumati Chanu of Bishnupur district, while Thotyola, daughter of RS Kaphungthing, defeated Thoudam Prameshwori Devi of Imphal West district.
Both Athiphro and Thotyola plays in 54 kg category (youth & elite).
So far, Senapati district has managed to bag 14 medals including 3 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals on the fourth day of the 2nd Manipur Olympic Games 2022 which is underway at 16 competition venues across the state since August 26.
On Monday, wushu players- Hrangaolou (48kg) of Senapati, which borders Nagaland, bagged silver in 48kg category while Willington and Loli Rakuyio Sanwibou Challai secured bronze medals in 65 kg and 70 kg categories respectively.
Earlier, the district had bagged three gold medals in athletics -- two gold by H Ngaopulou in 5000 metres (15:47:26sec) and 10,000 metres (32:55:37sec) race and one by Kushal Agustus in men’s long jump (6.53m).
The other three silver medallists from the district are H Hriipune (women’s long jump), Taiba Boniface (High jump) and Lovingson (Men’s Japanese Judo).
The remaining bronze medals were bagged by Rakheveio Limai (Shotput), PS Kholourai (Mukna men 80 kg), Dupola Raong (46kg Women’s Japanese Judo), Duni Joshophine (44kg Women’s Japanese Judo) and Badminton women doubles (Veronica Inka & Charaine).
Ukhrul district has so far secured 16 bronze and 3 silver medals. The silver medals came from Fencing and athletics while the bronze came from Judo (2),Shooting (6), Karatedo (1), fencing (5), athletics (1) and boxing (1).
The second edition of the Manipur Olympic Games 2022, which was held after almost three decades, will conclude with a closing function here on Wednesday.
The state chief minister N Biren Singh, state youth affairs sports minister Govindas Konthoujam and president Dr. Th Radheshyam Singh of Manipur Olympic Association (MOA) will attend the closing function at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, world’s oldest living pologround in Imphal.
The prize distribution will also be held during tomorrow’s closing function which is scheduled to start from 3pm after releasing a commemorative souvenir by the chief minister and presentation of a brief report on the games by MOA secretary general.
