He stated that these institutions function within the framework of the Constitution with defined powers, and when any of them oversteps or fails to act in the public interest, the press plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability and maintaining checks and balances.
Referring to Article 19 of the Constitution of India, he noted that although freedom of expression is guaranteed, it is subject to reasonable restrictions.
He urged the media to act responsibly, keeping in mind national security, sovereignty, integrity, public order, morality, and decency and to refrain from inciting violence or harming friendly relations.
President of Editors’ Guild Manipur, Khojendra Khomdram stated that freedom of speech and expression is not unlimited and must be exercised with responsibility by the media fraternity.
He emphasised that the primary duty of the press is to present truthful and accurate news to the public.
He further underlined the crucial role of editors in carefully examining news content and deciding whether it is suitable for publication in the interest of the general public.
Earlier, in his keynote address, Secretary, EGM, Yumnam Rupachandra, stated that World Press Freedom Day 2026, observed under the leadership of UNESCO, underscores the vital role of press freedom in promoting peace, particularly in conflict-affected regions like Manipur.
He remarked that the theme ‘Shaping a future of peace,’ highlights that peace is built on trust, truth, and dialogue, which are upheld by a free and responsible press.
He stressed that in times of conflict, misinformation and fear can spread rapidly, and therefore, journalism must focus on truth, unity, and responsible reporting rather than division.
He further stated that journalists are not merely observers but play a key role in ensuring that all voices are heard with fairness and dignity.
Rupachandra urged all stakeholders to support responsible journalism, stating that a well-informed society is essential for lasting peace.
