IMPHAL — Commemorating ‘World Anthropology Day,’ a three-day international seminar got underway at Manipur University auditorium on Thursday on the theme “Anthropology in practice: Health, culture and security.”
Manipur’s Health minister, Dr. S Ranjan Singh, along with the vice chancellor of (DM University) Prof. N Rajmuhon Singh; president of Anthropological Society of Manipur, Prof. K Saratchandra; Prof Vijoy S Sahay; and Prof S Jibonkumar Singh, head of Anthropology department at Manipur University, Prof. S Jibonkumar Singh were present on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ranjan stated that health is not merely a concept but a reality of life. He explained that according to Anthropology, culture means “what we do, what we have and what we perceive in society.”
Elaborating that the state facing tremendous issues such as homelessness, food security, law and order, violence, death and dying, mental health and chains of concomitant problems in the last 10 months, he was of the opinion that such seminars would help in designing, devising and intervening the current issues.
It was learned that thirteen deliberations from invited speakers and more than 120 papers on different aspects of Anthropology in practice would be presented during the seminar.
In his welcome address, Prof. Moirangthem Cha Arunkumar of Anthropology department at Manipur University, said, “All the paper presenters will make the lights and shades of this seminar on Anthropology in practice.”
The World Anthropology Day is celebrated on the 3rd Thursday of February every year. It is celebrated to educate people about the science of human behaviour, biology and how human societies function.
