Manipur observes int’l day of older persons

Our correspondent Imphal, Oct.1 (EMN): Manipur’s Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister Nemcha Kipgen called upon the attention of all the NGOs and stakeholders to lend necessary assistance to those older persons in distress and open doors for them. The Minister made the appeal while observing state level of International Day of Older Persons 2017 Khunthokhanbi Sanglen, Thangmeiband in Imphal on Sunday. Minister Nemcha also assured that she will urge the Government to open hospital specially meant for old-aged people. Stressing on the theme of this year “Stepping into the Future: Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Persons in Society”, she highlighted the major contributions of the older persons in moulding our society and enlightening us with the rays of development. Wherever we, as a society stand today, major credit goes to them. On this occasion, Social Welfare department presented gifts as a token of appreciation to the older persons present at the day’s function. The event was also attended by Commissioner H Deleep Singh of Social Welfare department, its Director Jacintha Lazarus and Joint Director Surrender A Shishak as functional president President and guests of honour respectively. The International Day for Older Persons, 2017 was also celebrated under the theme ‘Stepping into the Future; Tapping the Talents, Contributions and Participation of Older Person in Society & Education ,‘ at the premises of Regional Rural Training Center Office, Wangbal Thoubal.Labour & Employment Minister Th Radheshyam Singh, MANIDCO Chairman Dr Y Radheshyam, Singh, Deputy Commissioner L Nabakishwar Singh of Thoubal district, District Supervisors, and older persons from different places attended the observation. Manipur Catholic Women Convention for 2017 underway The 2nd Manipur Catholic Women Convention 2017 is underway under the theme “Women in the Family, Church and Society” at Christ Jyoti School Mantripukhri campus near Imphal on Sunday. State’s Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister Nemcha Kipgen was the chief guest of second day of the four day convention. Speaking on the occasion Minister Kipgen stressed that the chosen theme “Women in the Family, Church and Society” is extremely relevant as women of today is the epitome of developed society. She expressed that as the lone woman Minister in the present Government in the state, she felt deeply connected and privilege to be among all the women delegates of today’s function.She said women need the attention of one and all, especially in order to push forward our goals to improve the family as much as the Church and our society. There is a common saying – “If you educate a daughter, you educate an entire family,” she added.She said there is a strong need to acknowledge the importance of the pivotal role played by women in the formation, upbringing and establishment of the family and the society as much as in the Church. The function was also attended by Reverend Dominic Lumon, D.D, Archbishop – Archdiocese of Imphal, Rt. Rev. Gerald Almeida, Chairman of Justice and Peace Commission, Catholic Bishops’ Council of India, Fr. Louis Pallikunnel, General Convenor of the Convention 2017 and Ts. Shelvi Monsang, President, Manipur Catholic Women Organisation.
