A 55-year-old man was shot dead and his wife seriously injured after unidentified assailants attacked their home in Manipur's Imphal East district.
IMPHAL — A 55-year-old man was shot dead and his wife seriously injured after unidentified assailants allegedly attacked them at their residence in Manipur's Imphal East district in the early hours of Monday, sources said.
The incident occurred at around 2.30 am at Keirao Wangkhem Mamang Leikai under Irilbung Police Station when the assailants allegedly forced open the front door of the house and attacked the couple using firearms and sharp weapons.
The deceased has been identified as Ng Thambou, while his wife, Keinatombi, sustained severe head and neck injuries.
According to sources, Thambou was shot dead after confronting the attackers when they allegedly attempted to enter the room where his son and daughter were staying. Keinatombi was reportedly assaulted with a sharp weapon during the attack.
The assailants fled the scene immediately after the incident. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained.
Keinatombi was rushed to a government hospital in Imphal for treatment, while Thambou's body was shifted to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) mortuary in Porompat for post-mortem examination.
A police team, accompanied by forensic experts, visited the crime scene and carried out the necessary investigation. Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Meanwhile, residents of the Wangkhem area convened a public meeting and constituted a Joint Action Committee (JAC). The committee resolved not to claim Thambou's body unless the perpetrators are arrested by July 22.
