Manipur jump to 9th in medal tally

On the eighth day of the ongoing 35th National Games at Kerala today, Manipur bagged two more gold medals and ranked 9th in the medal tally, according to Manipur Olympic Association(MOA) officials.
Archery teams of Manipur won two gold medals in the mixed Indian round and Indian round team events. The gold medalist archers in the mixed Indian round team include P Sonia and M Sunder, who scored 140 points against 139 of Punjab team while Indian round team archers of Manipur, who won gold medal are H Bijendranath, M Sunder, Th Lalngamba and N Arjun. They scored 214 point against their rival Bihar archers’ 209 points in as tough competition at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium at Kaloor, Kerala.
With the day’s medals, Manipur jumped from 11th to 9th rank in the medal tally. Manipur is also expected to earn more gold medals from wushu, cycling and fencing events which are scheduled to begin from Monday onwards, according to MOA officials. So far Manipur bagged a total of 12 medals including 6 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals.
Earlier, Manipur’s lifters and rowers bagged two gold medals each while athletes of Yatching and Weightlifting earn two silver medals. The credit of winning four bronze medals goes to lifters, rowers and wrestlers.
Meanwhile, the state’s women football team stormed into the semi finals of the ongoing women’s football competition by defeating Jharkhand by 11-0 goals at Trissur’s Corporation Stadium on Friday. Manipur will meet hosts Kerala in their semi final on Sunday.
