Manipur journalists released ‘unconditionally’

Two Manipur senior journalists who were arrested on Sunday by the Manipur Police in connection with publication of an article titled “Revolutionary Journey in a mess” in their news portal were unconditionally released on Monday evening, according to a source.

It was stated that senior journalist and executive editor of news portal The Frontier Manipur, Aribam Dhananjoy, also known as Paojel Chaoba, and the editor Sadokpan Dhiren, were arrested by Manipur Police on Sunday, after an FIR was filed by Inspector P Sanjoy Singh, OC Singjamei police station, in connection to an article written by one M Joy Luwang and published in the news portal.

The FIR stated that the two senior journalists along with the author were “attempting to bring hatred, contempt, disaffection against government and also criminal conspiracy and statements conducing to public mischief with common intention by being a sympathiser of unlawful organisation”.

“A suo moto case under FIR No. 11(1)2021 SJM PS U/S 124-A/120-B/505(b)/34-IPC & 39(P) Act has been registered against M Joy Luwang and editors of the Facebook page of online web portal “The Frontier Manipur” for investigation”, it stated.

According to the FIR, in the article, the author ‘openly endorsed’ revolutionary ideologies and activities an expressed shock and dismay at the deteriorating character of the armed revolutionary leaders of Manipur in the recent decade.

“And he called out to the people of Manipur to become true revolutionaries and preached about behaviours and characters that a true revolutionaries should posses”, it read.

It also said that article attempts to bring hatred, contempt and feeling of enmity against Rule of Law and the government, which is likely to cause fear or alarm to the public inducing them to commit an offence against the State thereby posing serious threats of internal security.
