Imphal, Aug. 22 (EMN): In a move to create legal awareness among the common people, the Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials on eight important legislations were released in local dialects, including five tribal dialects, for the first time in the Manipur’s legal history during a function in Imphal on Thursday.
Manipur’s Law and Legislative affairs Minister L Jayentakumar, Advocate General N Kumarjit and Secretary of Law and Legislative affairs department, Nungsitombi Athokpam attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, Jayentakumar said that civilised people need civilised laws and regulations, which can be amended from time to time to suit the existing systems.
“So we need to give respect to laws and regulations to help maintain proper governance in the region,” the law minister said. “Let us maintain the rule of law.”
It may be mentioned that the IEC materials which were released in the day’s function were prepared under the Union Ministry of Law and Justice project called ‘Legal empowerment to the marginalised sections of the society in Manipur’, and it was published by Law and Legislative Affairs department of Manipur.
The eight legislations, which have been translated into seven local languages, including five tribal dialects, are the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993; the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act 1956; the Special Marriage Act, 1954; the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015; the Rights of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009; the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986; the Family Court Act 1984; and the Manipur (Hills Area) District Council Act 1971.
The five tribal dialects are Paite, Poumai, Rongmei, Tangkhul and Thadou-Kuki while the other two local languages are Bengali script Manipuri and Meitei script (Mayek).
Contraband drug seized; one arrested

A team of Thoubal district police seized 15.02 gram of contraband drugs, suspected to be heroine number 4, from the possession of one Hibjur Rahman alias Wangmem Ibothem (35) and INR 60,590, two mobile phones and few containers.
The seizure was made during a search operation at a house in Sangaiyumpham Mamang Leikai Part I in Thoubal district based on reliable information at around 6.30 am on Thursday, police sources said. The arrested people along with the seized items were handed over to Thoubal police station.
Journalists meet chief minister

A six-member team of Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union (MHJU) called on Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, and highlighted their grievances, on Thursday.
The MHJU team was led by its president Ramkung Pamei. The other functionaries of MHJU who attended the meeting were Editor Thangzalian of Lamka Post, Editor Lalsawm Sellate of Hmansawnnathar, Editor S Nengkhanlun of Zogam Today, Editor Peter Adani of Hornbill Express and Timothy Z Zothe of Manmasi digest monthly.
The MHJU team submitted a memorandum to the chief minister drawing his attention to the need of a Press Club each in the district headquarters while urging him to start construction within this financial year from Tamenglong district headquarters.
After patiently listening to the proposal, the chief minister assured them to look into their needs and grievances. He also discussed various developmental works being executed in different hill districts with the scribes.
The MHJU team also requested the chief minister to attend the foundation day celebration of the union as chief guest on September 7.
