Manipur Governor visits bus accident victims

Imphal, Dec. 22 (EMN): Manipur Governor La Ganesan on Thursday visited the injured students and teachers of the tragic bus accident that took place at Nungsai Part-III(Tubung) along the Old Cachar Road Noney district.

On Wednesday, seven students, a teacher and a warden were killed while 38 others injured when a bus carrying 47 students and staff of Thambalnu Higher Secondary School, Yairipok Top Chingha in Imphal East district, overturned at Nungsai village located around 50km away from the state capital.

The students and staff of the school were heading towards Khoupum, a picturesque valley under Noney district on a study tour.

 After the fatal accident, the injured students and teachers were in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Raj Medicity hospital in Imphal.

The Governor met all the injured students and teachers and enquired about their health, and prayed for their speedy recovery.

 Later, speaking to the media, Ganesan said, ‘it was the most unfortunate accident that claimed many precious lives and injured many students’.

Currently, seven students are undergoing treatment at RIMS hospital. All of them (three each in orthopedic and surgery wards while one in ICU) are stable, hospital sources said.

On the other hand, of the total 32 injured who were admitted at Raj Medicity, six are in ICU and eight are in the medicine ward while remaining injured students are out of danger, the source added.

Prime minister condoles demise of victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths of the students and teachers in the tragic bus accident and announced INR 2 lakh ex-gratia to the next of kin of each deceased from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund).

In a tweet, Modi said, “Anguished by the loss of lives in Manipur’s Noney district due to a tragic bus accident. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover soon. The Manipur government is providing all possible assistance to those affected.

“An ex-gratia of INR 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased in the bus accident. The injured would be given INR 50,000.”

Earlier, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren had also announced ex-gratia of INR 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, and INR 1 lakh each for those with serious injuries, and INR 50,000 each for those with minor injuries.
