Manipur Government underscores organ donation
IMPHAL — Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Monday attended the ‘Organ donation solicitation programme’ named ‘Legacy of Renewed Hope’ at the Shija Hospital and Research Institute (SHRI) in Imphal.
The programme was held in honour of the first deceased organ donor in North East India. It may be noted that the first kidney organ donation and transplantation from a brain-dead person was carried out in Manipur on August 2, 2023, the first in the entire North-Eastern region.
Addressing the gathering, the governor said that “life and death is in the hands of God but if we cooperate in organ donation, we can save many lives and it will be a great service to humanity. Organ donors leave a lasting legacy after their demise by helping others and their lives become meaningful.”
Uikey hailed Mohan Foundation and Shija Hospital and Research Institute Private Limited for their indispensable services by successfully performing difficult surgeries like organ transplantation to save lives.
She said that organ transplant is not only a modern medical method but it was also done in ancient times. She also extended her gratefulness to all the doctors and stakeholders for scripting history in the field of medical science.
The governor also lauded the district administration of Imphal East and Imphal West and Police department for successfully maintaining a green corridor, which was created for uninterrupted transportation of organs from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences to Shija Hospital.
She further underscored the need to inspire the spirit of organ donation.
During the programme, the governor also felicitated Sarungbam Amusana, the mother of the late Sarungbam Kennedy, the deceased organ donor.
