Manipur constitutes committees to monitor illegal influx

Imphal, Aug. 2 (EMN): Manipur government has constituted two committees including a state and district level committee to monitor the entry or presence of illegal immigrants besides creating public awareness to effectively counter the situation post publication of final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. Announcing this in a hurriedly called press conference here this evening, chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh said the committees are state and district level committees.
Biren said the special secretary (Home) of the state government will be the chairman of the state level committee while all the deputy commissioners (DCs) and superintendents of police (SPs) will be the members. The DC of the district concerned will be the chairman of the district level committees, concerned SPs, sub-divisional officers, sub-divisional police officers, sub-divisional collectors and officers in charge will be the members.

Both the committees will initiate steps for checking and verification accordingly with immediate effect in every locality or village, he said. The committees may also invite representatives of civil society organisations etc for participation in its proceedings as and when required, he added.
Considering the situation, state government has also opened a police check post at the Imphal International Airport since the last three days to prevent possible influx of illegal migrants into the border state, he informed.

He said similar steps had already been taken up at important entry points including Jiribam, Mao gate and Tamenglong district rail head as well as along Manipur-Mizoram border besides routine boat patrolling at Jiribam areas.

Ahead of the publication of final draft of NRC, the state government had already taken up necessary steps by deploying extra security personnel at Jiribam area bordering Assam’s Cachar district besides border areas of Tamenglong and Mao gate area bordering Nagaland.
