Imphal, Jan. 26 (EMN): Manipur celebrated the 73rd Republic Day in a peaceful manner despite the boycott call given by several armed underground outfits.
Governor La Ganesan hoisted the national flag at Kangla in Imphal and took salutes from 17 march past contingents.
During the celebration, Governor Ganesan also distributed police medals to the police officers and personnel for distinguished services.
33 officers and personnel of Manipur Police were awarded Police medal for gallantry, President’s medal for distinguished service and Police medal for meritorious service.
The state-level celebration at Kangla fort was attended by chief minister N Biren Singh, assembly speaker Y Khemchand, ministers, chief secretary, MLAs, police officials and state officials, among others.
The march past parade started from 1st Manipur Rifles parade ground and passed through main routes via Saluting base at Kangla and converged at the starting point again.
Later, Singh addressed the vote of thanks at 1st Manipur Rifles Parade Ground.
The celebration was scaled down in view of the rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases, as well as the upcoming state assembly election, 2022.
Meanwhile, Imphal city wore a deserted look following the boycott of Republic Day and complete shutdown called by various militant organisations operating in the state.
